Sometimes these potholes have been there for so long we might forget about them or think them commonplace. They are often just downright annoying and we might not consider how dangerous they are. However, while it might be hard to believe, potholes are one of the leading causes of traffic accidents to both drivers and pedestrians.
Motor Vehicle Accidents and Problems.
Potholes can severely damage vehicles. Drivers might be unaware of the potholes and drive over them at full speed, causing major damage to the undercarriage or front of their car. Tires can become damaged and even get holes in them from hitting a pothole, causing the tires to need to be replaced or realignment might be needed.
Additionally, potholes can cause major motor vehicle accidents. A tire can come loose and hit another car, or a driver could notice the pothole and swerve at the last second, hitting another driver and vehicle. This can be a chain effect and cause other drivers to crash as a result of the driver’s quick reaction to the pothole. Potholes are especially dangerous on the major highways and interstates, where drivers are going at much higher speeds. Accidents that happen at top speeds are often fatal or lead to serious injuries. Deep potholes often occur in parking lots, at casinos or car dealerships. These too, can cause major damage to customer vehicles.
Pedestrian Incidents
Potholes are not only dangerous to drivers but to pedestrians as well. While you should always be careful when walking near a road, pedestrians are unaware of potholes. If a driver swerves to miss a pothole, they can hit a pedestrian. Injuries are often serious when a pedestrian is hit, as they have no form of protection being outside of a vehicle. Imagine stepping into a deep pothole unawares, this may lead to torn ligaments or broken bones.
